海洋プラスチックを素材にアクセサリーを作る親子向け講座　「ハンドメイドで海を救う！海洋プラスチックでつくる　うみのアクセサリーワークショップ」を横浜市で開催

海洋プラスチック問題について、楽しみながら体験的に知るプログラム

当ワークショップは、ジョンソン株式会社の日本本社がある横浜市において、地域のコミュニティに向けて環境教育を行うプロジェクトの一環です。自分たちの暮らしと世界の環境問題がつながっていることを実感できる機会をつくり、海洋プラスチック問題への対策を促進することを目指しています。これまでに、横浜市の学校での出前授業や、親子向けのクリーンアップイベント等、さまざまな体験型のプログラムを企画・実施し、昨年度は（※1）、のべ1190人の参加者が、このプロジェクトに関わりました。

今回新たに始まる「ハンドメイドで海を救う！海洋プラスチックでつくる　うみのアクセサリーワークショップ」は、「“可愛い”で地球を守る」をコンセプトに、海洋プラスチックを素材としたアクセサリーを制作しているブランド「sobolon」とのコラボレーションで実施されます。

海に流出してしまったプラスチックは、生き物の力で分解をすることができないため、回収をされなければ、そのまま海の中を漂い続け、生き物や自然環境や私たちの生活に影響を与え続けます。本ワークショップでは、実際に浜辺に漂着し、人の手で回収された海洋プラスチックを、アクセサリー作りの素材として扱います。一度はごみになってしまったプラスチックをアップサイクルしてアクセサリーを作る事を通して、海洋プラスチック問題について知り、プラスチックが海へ流出しないためにどのように生活をしたらよいか、それぞれの参加者に考えてもらうことが目的です。

アクセサリー作りという、幅広い世代が一緒に体験できる魅力的な活動を入り口にすることで、このワークショップが、環境問題への関心を持ったり、参加者が実際に海洋プラスチック問題に取り組んだりする第一歩となることを目指しています。

海洋プラスチック問題の改善に向けて

環境問題の解決を目指すには、一部の人が取り組んで行くのではなく、すべての人が一体として取り組んでいく必要があります。本プロジェクトはこれまで、小学生親子やユース世代を主な対象としていましたが、今回は大人のみでの参加も受け付けています。同じ目標を持つ団体と協働し、より幅広い世代の市民を当事者として巻き込んでいくことで、横浜市から世界に活動が広がっていくことを、引き続き、目指していきます。

An accessory making workshop for children and their parents, “Save the Sea with Handcrafting!  Ocean Plastic Accessory Making Workshop” will be held in Yokohama City

Japan Environmental Education Forum holds visiting lectures and events themed on ocean plastic problems for communities in Yokohama City with donations from SC Johnson.

On January 27 and 28, 2024, a new program, “Save the Sea with Handcrafting! Ocean Plastic Accessory Making Workshop,” will begin.

With the donations from SC Johnson. (located in Nishi Ward, Yokohama City, President: Masahiro Washizu), a global manufacturer of household and professional products headquartered in the U.S., Japan Environmental Education Forum (JEEF, located in Arakawa Ward, Tokyo, Director: Osamu Abe), an organization that provides environmental education domestically and internationally, has been offering environmental education programs aimed at reducing ocean plastic waste since 2021 at elementary schools in Yokohama City and for children and their parents as well as the younger generation residing in Yokohama City.

This time, JEEF is holding an accessory making workshop that uses actual ocean plastic in collaboration with “sobolon,” a brand that creates ocean plastic accessories under the concept of “Save the Earth with ‘Kawaii.’”

 A program that enables participants to learn about ocean plastic problems through a fun experience

This workshop is a part of JEEF’s environmental education project for the local communities of Yokohama City, which is where the Japan Headquarters of SC Johnson. is located. The goal is to provide opportunities that enable people to realize that their lives are connected to the world’s environmental problems, and promote measures against ocean plastic problems. JEEF has been planning and implementing various experience-based programs, including visiting lectures at schools in Yokohama City and cleaning events for children and their parents. Last year (*1), a total of 1,190 attendees took part in JEEF’s project.

The new workshop “Save the Sea with Handcrafting!  Ocean Plastic Accessory Making Workshop” will be held in collaboration with “sobolon,” a brand that creates ocean plastic accessories under the concept of “Save the Earth with ‘Kawaii.’”

As plastic waste discharged into the ocean cannot be degraded by biological organisms, they will continue to drift in the ocean and affect living creatures, the natural environment, and our lives unless they are collected. At the workshop, ocean plastic that is washed ashore and collected by people will be used to create accessories. The purpose of the workshop is to enable participants to acknowledge the ocean plastic problems by upcycling plastic that was once discarded as waste and creating accessories, and think how they should prevent plastic from being discharged into the ocean.

By offering an accessory making workshop, an appealing activity that allows a wide range of generations to experience together, as a gateway, JEEF aims to turn this opportunity into participants’ first step in taking an interest in environmental problems and addressing ocean plastic problems.

Working toward better addressing ocean plastic problems

When striving to solve environmental problems, it is necessary to have everyone, not some people, address them as one. Up until now, JEEF’s project has been held mainly for the younger generation, including elementary school students and their parents, but this time, JEEF is accepting adult-only participants as well. JEEF continues to aim to spread their activities from Yokohama City to the world by working together with organizations with the same goal, involving citizens of an ever-wider range of generations, and fostering a sense of ownership in them.
